Located near the coast in Budleigh Salterton; this bungalow needed modernising, and the layout optimised.
Working with the architect, the homeowners seeked planning permission for a 2-storey contemporary extension to the rear of the property. Plus sought to simplify the exiting internal layout of the bungalow, by creating generous sized rooms and a layout that flowed.
The contemporary extension was added to the back of the property. Architecturally the extension is very different from the original bungalow. With cubic shapes and large expanses of glass. But thanks to the architect, the two work perfectly together. Being at the rear of the property the contemporary extension has very little impact on the look of the street and the surrounding area.
A key requirement for the extension was to integrate the view. Making it a focal point both upstairs and downstairs, as previously it was hidden by the small windows. The expansive glazed areas within the extension now not only allow light deep into the property, but also maximizes the views out towards the coast.
Downstairs the extension has allowed for an open plan kitchen, dining, living room area to be created.
Upstairs previously, the cottage had only a small storage room. As a result of the new extension, the upper floor was extended and two further rooms, with balconies were added.
Having been recommended Aspect Windows, the homeowners visited the showroom to review and experience their different options.
A 6 pane and a 3 pane bi-folding door was chosen for the extension downstairs. Offering views out onto the picturesque garden. Allowing the area to be completely opened up on two sides, with the boundaries to the outside removed when opened. Seamlessly connecting the inside and outside space, whilst flooding the area with natural light.
Pressings were added to the support posts on the extension, in the same colour as the window. Helping to join the glazed areas together, whilst creating a contemporary look.
A 4 pane and a 2 pane bi-folding door was also chosen for upstairs in the extension. Allowing the view to be enjoyed whatever the weather, with direct access onto the balcony.
The bungalow was refurbished throughout. Aluminium windows were chosen, to replace the existing PVCu windows. The same colour as the windows and doors in the extension was chosen to help tie old and new together.
RAL 9016 – anthracite grey was the colour picked for the windows and doors. A popular contemporary colour which works perfectly with both the red brick of the existing building and the white render of the extension.
