The homeowners of this mid century villa in Torquay were looking to improve the connection between the house and the garden.
The homeowners reached out to van Ellen + Sheryn Chartered Architects to design them a new garden room extension. Which would provide them with a new kitchen and dining space for their family. The new room would overlook an outside entertaining space and the garden beyond.
Large 7.5 metre wide lift and slide, sliding doors were chosen for the north elevation of the extension which looks out over the garden. With two of the three doors effortlessly sliding to the left, the homeowners are able to open three quarters of the aperture. Seamlessly extending their dining space out onto the patio. Adjoining the sliding doors in the kitchen end of the extension are 3 square windows – which sit above the kitchen worktop. A tilt and turn window sits in the middle of two fixed windows for easy ventilation in the kitchen.
To maximise the light in the room, on the east and west end walls high level windows sit, shaped to match the slant of the roof. Along with 3 x fixed flat roof-lights in the ceiling.
Aluminium flashing was added above the doors and windows on the north elevation to hide the steels and help bring everything together.
