An old log shed and mid-20th century milking parlor was converted into a single-storey dwelling, with views over the Dorset countryside.
The dilapidated outbuildings were situated on a farm which had been in the family for generations, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located within a popular holiday destination, the owners converted the farm buildings into a holiday cottage.
The owners worked closely with the architect, planners and listed building officers, to draw up a plan to convert the building into a two-bedroom cottage. Externally the structure was designed to keep the original look and footprint of the existing farm building. The original openings were kept on the north side of the building. On the south side a glass-to-glass corner window with large sliding doors were included to make the most of the views.
With the views and natural light at the heart of the design. The bedrooms sit within the original stone log shed, while the open plan living accommodation is within the milking parlor. Here views across the valley can be enjoyed.
On the South East corner of the milking parlor the glass to glass corner sits. At nearly 2 meters high, two pieces of glass meet around an 90 degree corner. Joined together using structural silicone, to create a weather proof seal and a neat appearance. Creating a focal point and maximising the views beyond. When rebuilding the milking parlor the builders installed a structural steel in order to support the roof above the glass corner window.
The glass to glass corner window was paired next to a 3 meter wide sliding door. Enhancing the views beyond and really drawing your eye to this area of the room. The sliding doors are operated via a lift and slide configuration. Where the doors get lifted slightly off the tracks and onto rollers, when the lever handle is rotated. This allows for effortless opening. The doors were design on a double track configuration, with both doors being able to slide open behind each other, giving flexibility.
The property also features an aluminium front door with a solid panel, colour coded hinges and a side window. Plus 17 contemporary aluminium windows, with trickle vents for ventilation and building regulations.
All of the doors and windows are in RAL 7016 Matt Anthracite Grey. Matching the colour of the corrugated cladding on the milking parlor externally, and creating a modern feel internally. With colour matched handles throughout.
Soloar control glass was chosen for the glazing within the southerly elevations, in order to reduce solar heat gain. Whilst still offering high levels of natural light.
