This 4 bedroom house sits along the estuary river bank in Shaldon, Devon. Within a conservation area with picturesque views. The house required refurbishing inside and out; an extension adding and a internal reconfiguration, in order to suit the family’s needs and lifestyle.
A key requirement for the family was to open up the elevation of the property which faces the river. Allowing the views to be enjoyed, and easy access to the river.
Working with their architect and CW Build, a local building firm, the homeowners added an 1.5 metre extension along the length of the kitchen. Doubling the space in the kitchen, and adding a balcony above. This has created an outside area for bedroom two, helping to make the most of the views.
Large glazed areas were incorporated into the downstairs design. Creating a space which is flooded with light, whilst framing views which can be enjoyed from the kitchen, living, and dining rooms downstairs.
Externally cladding has been added to the property, which has completely transformed the houses appearance. Creating a modern look whilst connecting it materially to both the river, the landscape beyond and the boathouse next door.
A 3 metre wide, double track, lift and slide, sliding door was chosen for the kitchen extension. Both door leafs within the sliding door has the ability to open, giving the family flexibility in how they use the door. Casement windows have been installed behind the sink/worktops and floor to ceiling windows added to the snug area. Creating a bright airy space.
French doors allow the view to be enjoyed from the dining area, whilst a second set of sliding doors allow spectacular estuary views from the living room. With each room having direct and easy access out onto to the patio and the river beyond. Allowing the rooms to extend to the outside with a seamless transition.
Upstairs French doors were added to the 2nd bedroom, with opening full length windows either side. The French doors lead out onto the newly created balcony above the kitchen extension.
A 3rd set of sliding doors were added to the master bedroom. Replacing the dated, hard to open sliding doors which previously sat there. The new doors are easy to open, have minimal sight-lines, and allow for the view to be enjoyed, whatever the weather.
All the other windows within the property have also been replaced with new slim line aluminium casement windows, creating a modern, consistent look.
Due to the location of the property, a pre-anodised marine grade paint finish was selected. The pre-anodised finish protects the frames from the harsh marine environment they will be exposed to.
RAL 7016 – anthracite grey was chosen for the windows and doors. Helping to create a modern, contemporary look, which works perfectly with both the new exterior, and the new interior of the property.
