Composite Window FAQs

What is a composite window?

A composite window is a window that has been manufactured using two different materials together.

Timber or uPVC creates a durable core before it is finished in an aluminium clad. The combination of two materials creates a high-performing window that is easier to sustain and longer-lasting.

What materials can be used in composite windows?

The two most commonly used material combinations in composite windows are uPVC with aluminium or timber with aluminium.

The former has a uPVC core and is finished with an external aluminium clad, while the latter has a timber core and is finished in aluminium.

Fibreglass can also be used in composite windows.

What are the benefits of a composite window?

Composite windows come with a host of benefits when compared to traditional uPVC windows.

Longer lifespan

The combination of materials ensures a composite window has a longer lifespan than a traditional window. It can withstand harsher weather conditions without impacting its appearance or performance.

Low maintenance

The aluminium-clad exterior means the window requires less ongoing maintenance compared to a traditional timber window.

Timber windows will require regular painting and treating to maximise performance and longevity, whereas a composite window only requires a simple routine cleaning schedule.

Energy efficient choice

Composite windows can often be among the best-performing options on the market as a result of their strong core and combination of materials.

Are composite windows better than uPVC?

Composite windows can have their merits when compared to uPVC windows.

In comparison to uPVC windows, a composite window will be the premium option of the two. However, for the additional cost, composite windows can offer a considerably longer lifespan, less routine maintenance and improved thermal performance. Ultimately, this will depend on your style preferences, budget and space.

What is the life expectancy of composite windows?

The average lifespan of a composite window can vary between manufacturers.

Internorm claims their windows can last as long as 40 years, which is a 5-10-year improvement on the 25-year average for uPVC windows.

Meanwhile, Rationel claims that their composite window products can last up to 50 years with minimal ongoing maintenance.

VELFAC adds that their aluminium/timber composite windows can have an expected lifespan of 60 years, which is more than double the uPVC average.

How should I clean a composite window?

Cleaning a composite window is simple and hassle-free. Simply take a clean, soft cloth with water and a mild detergent.
