What is the minimum distance a wood burner can be installed from glass?
There is no single minimum distance that applies to every wood burner and glazing type. The required clearance depends on your stove’s design, heat output and the surrounding materials.
Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and have the positioning confirmed by a HETAS-registered installer.
As a precaution, it is suggested to allow at least 600mm between the wood burner and the glass, and to use toughened glass. This is general advice rather than an official installation requirement or a guarantee against heat damage. Your particular stove or glazing arrangement may require a greater distance.
Although glass itself is not combustible, heat from a nearby stove can cause uneven expansion, creating thermal stress that may crack the glass. Surrounding frames, seals and other components also need to be considered.
Before finalising your stove’s position, confirm the proposed clearance and glass specification with both your installer and glazing supplier.
