In traditional properties there is a clear distinction between the inside and outside of the house. In more modern properties this distinction is beginning to become blurred to optimise indoor/outdoor living.
Homebuilding and Renovating magazine, alongside Origin have put together a helpful video which provides tips and advice on how to best create that relationship between the inside and outside of your home, to optimise indoor/outdoor living.
The video features one of Aspect Windows case studies which has successfully blended the inside and out of the property, using a mixture of bi-folding doors, glazed walls and French doors.
The architecture of the property takes advantage of the views across the garden, giving an outdoorsy feel when you’re actually inside. The natural light from the glazing, makes the home feel light and bright, with a feeling of space.
Bi-folding doors, sliding doors, and french doors, can all be used to help create a seamless transition between the inside and outside, all with their own list of pros and cons. The functionality of the doors and the aesthetics you are looking to create, will have an impact on which are the right choice for your property. If you are unsure on which is the best option for your home, pop into our showroom and we can help you make the right decision.
An open corner will allow you to open up an entire corner or corners of a room, by having doors that open around the corner, completely removing any barriers to the outside. Achievable with both bi-folding and sliding doors.
A level threshold will also help to create that seamless transition, however be sure to choose a weathered threshold for your doors to ensure that your property is well protected from the elements (learn more about how to achieve a flush thresholds here). Creating a flush threshold needs to be planned in at the design stage, therefore forward planning really pays off.
Choosing the same flooring inside and out, is another was to help create a free flowing transition. Be sure to choose a material which is suitable for both internal and external use.
People typically choose to have the seamless transition to the outside in their kitchen/dining rooms as these tend to be towards the back of the house, however it can also work well in living rooms, home offices/studies or bedrooms.
Start by thinking how you could enjoy your garden from both the inside and the outside of your house.
